The Northwestern State Demons and Lamar Cardinals meet Saturday in week 2 FCS college football action at Provost Umphrey Stadium.
The Northwestern State Demons are coming off a 3-9 season that included a 2-5 record on the road. The Northwestern State Demons averaged 25.2 points and 380.8 yards while allowing 37.6 points and 420.4 yards. Bryce Rivers should takeover at quarterback, replacing Shelton Eppler, and he had 11 pass attempts last season. Northwestern State will have to find new production at running back, while Kendrick Price and Gavin Landry return at wide receiver, a duo that combined for more than 600 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, Ja'Quay Pough returns after leading the Demons with 109 tackles, Jomard Valsin had 3.5 sacks and Shemar Bartholomew had four interceptions. The Northwestern State Demons have serious holes on offense, but their defense should be solid out of the gate and keep them competitive.
The Lamar Cardinals finished 4-8 last season and that included a 3-3 record at home. The Lamar Cardinals averaged 22 points and 362.9 yards while allowing 31.6 points and 411.4 yards. Lamar will have to find a quarterback with both Shane Johnson and Jordan Hoy no longer on the roster. The good news is Kirkland Banks returns after leading the Cardinals with 506 receiving yards and one touchdown while Chaz Ward is back at running back after producing 281 yards on 80 carries. Defensively, Andre Mulinax had 55 tackles, Kyron Norwood had one sack and Steven Jones had one interception. The Lamar Cardinals are going to have a lot of new faces on both sides of the ball, and I’m especially worried about the offense. This could be a sluggish season for Lamar.
The Lamar Cardinals are replacing a ton of production on both sides of the ball and it's going to take time for things to come together with so many new faces. The Northwestern State Demons ween't good last season to say the least, but the defense is intact for the most part and that gives them a decent edge over Lamar at lest from the start. Ugly game, but Northwestern State is going to be in it until the end and should have a chance to steal it.
I'll grab the slight underdog here.
