The Western Carolina Catamounts and Furman Paladins face off on Saturday in Week 2 FCS College Football showdown at the Eugene E. Stone II Stadium.
The Western Carolina Catamounts are one of the few FCS teams to have played a game in the fall, but that didn’t didn’t go very well. Western Carolina was an added game for North Carolina, and the Tar Heels did what most expected would happen, blew them out. At halftime, Western Carlina was down 42-0 and even though the defense played better in the second half, it was too late as Western Carolina was defeated 49-9. Western Carolina had four different players who threw a pass but it was Will Jones who was the best player completing seven of his 15 passes for 55 yards. On the ground, the best player for Western Carolina was Donovan Spencer who finished the game putting 52 yards on the ground on 13 carries.
The Furman Paladins are ranked coming into this game and there are some expectations surrounding the team. Furman finished last season with an 8-5 record overall including 6-2 inside conference play. Furman runs an option offense and during the 2019 season they averaged 262.4 yards per game on the ground. Even though they are a run first team, they did average 144.6 yards per game through the air and in this game it’s going to be important that they use a balanced attack on offense. On offense a lot of starters are back from last year, but the defense did lose a lot of talent and they are going to need to be replaced in this game.
Western Carolina isn’t as bad as their 49-9 game looked against North Carolina, but they are still the worst team in this matchup. Western Carolina’s offense is going to struggle in this game to score and that will be the difference. Back Furman to come away with a win and a cover of the spread.
