The Sam Houston State Bearkats and Southeastern Louisiana Lions face off on Saturday in a Week 3 FCS College Football showdown at Bowers Stadium.
This is the first game of the season by both teams and the expectation is this should be a title battle. Sam Houston State is currently ranked 17th in the FCS while Southeastern Louisiana is ranked 18th.
The Southeastern Louisiana Lions had a big 2019 season but they were defeated in the second round at the hands of Montana, a second ranked team. Head coach Frank Scelfo is the reigning Southland Conference Coach of the Year. Last season, Southeastern Louisiana was an elite offensive team led by quarterback Cole Kelley who threw 10 touchdowns, and also led the team with ten rushing touchdowns. This is an offense that really likes to air it out, and in this game it’s all going to be about the offense airing it out and running up the score.
On the other side of this matchup is the Sam Houston State Bearkats who finished with a 6-3 record during the 2019 season, but it wasn’t enough to make the playoffs, something that has probably left a sour taste in their mouth. Sam Houston State is a run first team and they will lean on Donovan Williams who finished last year rushing for 14 touchdowns. Eric Schmid will be under center and in eight games during the 2019 season he finished throwing for 1733 yards and 12 touchdowns. In this game the offense is going to need to be strong again, and they have to be willing to win a shootout.
Sam Houston State is probably the stronger team, but Southeastern Louisiana has the offense to keep this game close. Sam Houston State is laying too many points in this one. Back Southeastern Louisiana against the spread.
