The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets meet the Kennesaw State Owls Saturday in college football action from Bobby Dodd Stadium. Kennesaw State is 1-0 on the young season after a week one win over Reinhardt. As for the Jackets, they played Northern Illinois in their first game. Kennesaw State played a five-game schedule this past spring, posting a 4-1 record overall with a 2-1 mark in Big South Conference play. The Owls finished in second place behind Monmouth in the abbreviated spring campaign.
The Owls started out their year with a win over Reinhardt, taking the game 35-25. Owls RB Jonathan Murphy did much of the heavy lifting on offense with 98 yards and two scores off 18 carries. Xavier Shepherd added eight carries for 60 yards and two scores as well.
Over on the Georgia Tech side, they played 10 games last fall but things didn’t go so well in the win column. The Yellow Jackets put up a 3-7 overall record with a 3-6 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. That left Georgia Tech near the bottom of the conference standings.
In the opener game versus Northern Illinois, Georgia Tech showed some life in the fourth quarter but couldn’t overcome the Huskies in a 22-21 defeat. Quarterback Jordan Yates put up 135 yards and a TD while Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 99 yards on 20 carries.
PICK: I’m going to take Georgia Tech, but probably staying away. The Yellow Jackets out-gained Northern Illinois 429-301 in their opener, notching 25 first downs to the Huskies’ 15. Georgia Tech was up late, but then gave up an 80-yard TD drive with a two-point conversion that sealed their fate. It easily could have—and should have—been a Georgia Tech victory.
As for Kennesaw State, they were in control for most of their game, abusing their rushing capabilities with five ground touchdowns. The Owls will likely go back to that clock-control attack, but I like Georgia Tech to rebound well here and cover.
