The Georgia Bulldogs meet the UAB Blazers Saturday in week 2 college football action from Sanford Stadium. UAB played Jacksonville State last week, emerging victorious in a blowout. As for the Bulldogs, they took on Clemson in their first game. In that one, Georgia hung on for a tight seven-point victory. UAB posted a nine-game season last year, finishing 6-3 overall and 3-1 in Conference USA play. That mark left the Blazers in first place in the West Division; they would go on to beat Marshall 22-13 in the Conference USA Championship Game. UAB’s Gasparilla Bowl game was ultimately cancelled, however.
In the season opener versus Jacksonville State, UAB got off to a rollicking start with a 31-0 blowout victory. Quarterback Tyler Johnston put up 320 yards with a pair of touchdowns, and Jermaine Brown led the rush with 78 yards and a score from 14 carries.
Over on the Georgia side, they had a pretty solid campaign last year with an 8-2 overall record and a 7-2 mark in Southeastern Conference play. The Bulldogs finished in second place in the East Division, and would go on to win the Peach Bowl 24-21 over Cincinnati.
In the Bulldogs’ first game versus Clemson, Georgia was up 10-0 by the fourth quarter and hung on for a 10-3 victory. Quarterback JT Daniels put up 135 yards and an interception, and Zamir White led the rush on 13 carries for 74 yards.
PICK: I’m sticking with Georgia. The Bulldogs’ rush defense was great in their week one game versus Clemson, allowing just two yards on the ground and 3.0 yards per play to the Tigers. Georgia collected 256 total yards themselves, and played something of a sloppy game with 10 penalties for 94 yards.
As for UAB, they had a good opener performance versus the Gamecocks, with 518 total yards and 8.6 yards per play. If the Georgia defense shows up here like they did in week one however, it’s going to be tough for UAB to find much daylight.
