TheLouisiana Ragin’ Cajuns meet the Nicholls State Colonels Saturday in college football action from Cajun Field. Nicholls is coming off an opener versus Memphis. In that one, the Colonels took a blowout loss. As for Louisiana, they played Texas in their first game this year. The Cajuns didn’t fare well, losing by 20 points. Nicholls managed to play seven games this past spring, finishing 4-3 overall with a 3-3 record in the Southland Conference. That result left the Colonels in fourth place in the standings. Nicholls started out well with three straight wins, but then lost three of their final four outings.
In the 2021 season opener versus Memphis, Nicholls fell behind 29-7 at the break and couldn’t’ recover in a 42-17 loss. QB Lindsey Scott put up 194 yards with one TD, while Julien Gums led the rush on 48 yards from 13 carries.
Over on the Louisiana side, they had a nice run last fall, going 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Cajuns won the West Division and shared the conference co-championship with Coastal Carolina. Louisiana also beat UTSA in the First Responder Bowl to cap off the year.
In their first action of the season versus Texas, Louisiana scored in every quarter but couldn’t keep up with the Longhorns in a 38-18 defeat. Levi Lewis threw for 282 yards and a score, and Jalen Williams had five catches for 71 yards.
PICK: I’m going to take Louisiana. The Cajuns’ 20-point loss in week one looks bad on paper, but the team did some good things against a tough Texas team. Louisiana had 358 total yards with 22 first downs, going 3-for-3 on fourth downs and turning the ball over only once. There are several things to clean up, but the bones are there for a competent team.
As for Nicholls, they gave up 587 total yards including 322 on the ground and a whopping 32 first downs to the Tigers. The defense couldn’t get off the field, forcing zero punts. I think the Colonels will match up better in this one but I like the Cajuns better on a cover.
