The Southern Miss Golden Eagles meet the Troy Trojan Saturday in week 3 college football action from Roberts Stadium. The Trojans are coming off a game versus Liberty. In that one, Troy took an eight-point defeat. As for the Eagles, they played Grambling State this past weekend. Southern Miss rolled to a shutout win in that game. Troy opened up the season versus Southern and cruised to a rousing 55-3 victory after a 34-3 first half. Trojans QB Taylor Powell put up 234 yards with two TDs and a pick, while Kimandi Vidal led the rushing attack on 81 yards and a score from 15 carries.
In game two versus Liberty, Troy fell behind 14-7 after one half and ultimately fell 21-13. Powell managed 211 yards with one TD and one INT there, and Luke Whittemore had 71 yards from three catches to lead the receivers.
Over on the Southern Miss side, their first game this year was against South Alabama. That one didn’t go so well for the Golden Eagles in a 31-7 defeat. Quarterback Trey Lowe managed just 133 yards and two interceptions, and Frank Gore Jr. had 81 yards on 19 carries.
Last week versus Grambling State, Southern Miss scored in every quarter on the way to a dominant 37-0 win. Lowe had 99 yards and a score on 10-of-13 passing, and Gore Jr. kept rolling on 162 yards and a TD from 21 carries.
The Trojans are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 after a straight-up loss and 1-4 ATS in their last five non-conference games. The under is 6-1 in Troy’s last seven road games as well.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 1-6 ATS in their last seven in September. Southern Miss is also 1-6 ATS in their last seven in September.
PICK: I like Southern Miss in this one. The Eagles dominated Grambling State in their last game, holding the Tigers to 141 total yards and 2.4 yards per play with nine first downs. Southern Miss posted 439 yards of offense on their end, including 290 rushing yards and 22 first downs.
As for Troy, they couldn’t get anything going on the ground in week two with just 21 rush yards and 13 first downs. The Trojans gave up 339 yards and 22 first downs on the other side. I think Troy will be better here but not good enough to manage a cover.
