The Western Michigan Broncos meet the San Jose State Spartans Saturday in week 4 college football action from Waldo Stadium. San Jose State matched up against Hawaii this past weekend. In that one, the Spartans put up a four-point victory. As for Western Michigan, they played Pittsburgh in their last outing. The Broncos managed a nice three-point win in that matchup. San Jose State didn’t have a whole lot of trouble against Southern Utah in their first game this season, ultimately cruising to a 45-14 blowout win. Game two versus USC was a different story, however; the Spartans gave up 17 fourth-quarter points in a 30-7 defeat.

In game three versus Hawaii, San Jose State carried a 14-7 edge into halftime during an eventual 17-13 win. Quarterback Nick Starkel put up 235 yards with two scores and a pick, and Dominick Mazotti led the receivers with 59 yards from two catches.

Over on the Western Michigan side, they had to face Michigan in their first game and fell behind 27-7 after the first half in an eventual 47-14 loss. The Broncos evened up their record in game two however, notching a 28-0 shutout win over Illinois State.

The Broncos took on Pittsburgh in their last outing. In that one, Western Michigan scored 10 points in the final quarter to take a nice 44-41 win. QB Kaleb Eleby had 337 yards with three touchdowns, and Sean Tyler led the rush with 84 yards and a score from 14 carries.

The Spartans are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight on turf and 7-2-2 ATS in their last 11 after a straight-up win. SJSU is also 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 road games.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six versus a team with a winning record and 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 at home. WMU is also 5-13 ATS in their last 18 after a straight-up win.

PICK: I’m going to take Western Michigan. The Broncos did a good job at keeping up with Pittsburgh in a shootout during their last game, notching 517 total yards, 28 first downs and a 7-of-17 mark on third downs. WMU does have some things to work on however, such as the 8.4 yards per play allowed and the 11 penalties.

As for San Jose State, they played a solid defensive game but were outgunned by Hawaii in most statistical categories. I think the Spartans may hang around here for a while, but this should be the Broncos’ cover to take.
