The Ohio State Buckeyes meet the Akron Zips Saturday in Week 4 college football action from Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Akron is coming off a game versus Bryant last weekend. The Zips won by three touchdowns in that one. As for the Buckeyes, they played Tulsa in their last outing. In that one Ohio State ended up taking a 21-point win as well. Akron got a tough draw against Auburn in their opening game and the outcome went accordingly. The Zips fell behind 37-0 at the break and stumbled to a 60-10 loss. In week two versus Temple it was more of the same; Akron was outscored by 14 in the second half in a 45-24 defeat.

In the week three game versus Bryant, the Zips scored 21 points in the fourth quarter on the way to a 35-14 win. QB DJ Irons put up 296 yards with three touchdowns, and also led the rush with 136 yards and a score. Anthony Williams added 103 yards with a TD as well.

Over on the Ohio State side, they were down 14-10 to Minnesota in their opening game, but surged in the second half on the way to a 45-31 win. Game two against Oregon was even more difficult, and the Buckeyes couldn’t keep the pace in a 35-28 defeat.

This past weekend versus Tulsa, Ohio State got off to a slow start with just 13 first-half points, but righted the ship in the second half during a 41-20 win. QB CJ Stroud had 185 yards with a TD and a pick, but TreVeyon Henderson did most of the offensive work on 277 yards with three rush scores.

The Zips are 6-20 ATS in their last 26 after a straight-up loss and 3-11 ATS in their last 14 after an ATS loss. Akron is also 1-4 ATS in their last five versus the Big Ten.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six in September and 5-2 ATS versus a team with a losing record. Ohio State is 2-5 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up win as well.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Ohio State, but that’s a pretty thick line. The Buckeyes got a huge lift in the rush game last weekend, which accounted for 323 of their 508 total yards. Ohio State was a little spotty on eight penalties and two turnovers against a plucky Tulsa team, however.

As for Akron, they were pretty mediocre until the fourth quarter in their last game, despite 578 total yards and 9.6 yards per play. The Zips aren’t going to have a whole lot of options against Ohio State though, so I like the Buckeyes slightly better on the potential cover.
