The Utah State Aggies meet the Boise State Broncos Saturday in Week 4 college football action from Maverik Stadium. Boise State just finished up against Oklahoma State this past weekend. In that matchup the Broncos fell in a tough defeat. As for Utah State, they played Air Force in their last outing. The Aggies bagged a four-point win in that one. Boise State had some issues with UCF in their opener this year, blowing a 10-point half-time lead during an eventual 36-31 defeat. Week two versus UTEP went better for the Broncos, however. Boise State had 31 second-quarter points on the way to a 54-13 blowout win.
In week three versus Oklahoma State, Boise State scored all their points in the first half (as did the Cowboys) in a 21-20 defeat. Quarterback Hank Bachmeier put up 242 yards with one TD and a pick. Khalil Shakir had 78 yards off eight receptions to led the receivers.
Over on the Utah State side, they started slow versus Washington State in their opener, but had a strong finish in a tight 26-23 win. The Aggies were able to keep it going in week two versus North Dakota, posting 21 fourth-quarter points in a comeback win 48-24.
In the Air Force game this past weekend, Utah State scored 36 second-half points in a comeback win 49-45. Logan Bonner had 253 yards with two scores, and Andrew Peasley added 195 additional pass yards with three more scores. Calvin Tyler led the rush on 132 yards and two TDs.
The Broncos are 4-1 ATS in their last five in September and 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games. Boise is also 1-4 ATS in their last five versus a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Aggies are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 in September and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. Utah State is 12-5 ATS versus a team with a losing record as well.
PICK: I’m going to go with Utah State. The Aggies were resilient in a high-flying showdown with Air Force last weekend, posting 448 passing yards and 7.1 yards per play on average. The Utah State defense did take a beating, however; they gave up 437 rush yards to the Falcons with 8.3 yards per play.
As for Boise State, they had a big passing yards advantage in their last game (242 to 82) but got burned on the rush with 246 yards allowed. This one looks like a pretty fun matchup but I like Utah State a little better cover-wise.
