The Iowa State Cyclones meet the Oklahoma State Cowboys Saturday in week 8 2021 Big 12 college football action from Jack Trice Stadium. Oklahoma State is coming off matchup with Texas last weekend. In that one, the Cowboys powered out an eight-point win. As for Iowa State, they played Kansas State in their last game. The Cyclones ended up winning by 13 points there. Oklahoma State got off to a nice start this year despite a few close calls. The Cowboys took out Missouri State in their opener 23-16, then Tulsa 28-23 and Boise State 21-20. After that it was two more wins versus Kansas State 31-20 and Baylor 24-14.
In last weekend’s big matchup versus Texas, Oklahoma State was down 24-16 heading into the fourth quarter, but then scored 16 unanswered points for a 32-24 win. Spencer Sanders finished with 178 yards, one TD and one pick. Jaylen Warren led the rush with 193 yards on 33 carries.
Over on the Iowa State side, they went 2-2 over their first four games. The wins came versus Northern Iowa 16-10 and UNLV 48-3; the losses were to Iowa 27-17 and Baylor 31-29. The Cyclones then took care of Kansas 59-7 on October 2 to get back over .500 on the year.
In the Kansas State matchup, Iowa State posted a 20-7 edge in the first half and held on for a solid 33-20 win. QB Brock Purdy had 208 yards and a TD on 22-of-25 passing, and Breece Hall had 197 yards with two scores from 30 carries.
The Cowboys are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last four road games. Oklahoma State is 16-5 ATS versus a team with a winning record as well.
Meanwhile, the Cyclones are 5-2 ATS in their last seven conference games and 33-16-2 ATS in their last 51 in October. The under is 6-1 in Iowa State’s last seven home games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with OK State. The Cowboys played with fire in the Texas game, but to their credit the team rallied in a big fourth quarter to steal the comeback win. Oklahoma State finished with 398 total yards 25 first downs and 4.9 yards per play.
As for Iowa State, they played consistent football in their last outing, scoring in every quarter on the way to 418 total yards and a 7.0-yard average. The Cyclones were able to relax on defense in the fourth quarter thanks to their big lead. This weekend’s matchup against Oklahoma State will be a much tougher test, and I like Iowa State to keep pace initially. Should be a fun matchup.
