The UNLV Rebels and San Jose State Spartans meet Thursday night in week 8 Mountain West college football action from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. San Jose State is coming off a matchup versus San Diego State. In that one the Spartans lost in double overtime. As for UNLV, they played Utah State in their last game. The Rebels ended up losing by four points. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.

San Jose State had an up-and down start to the season in their first six games, notching a 3-3 record. The Spartans had wins over Southern Utah 45-14, Hawaii 17-13 and New Mexico State alongside losses to USC 30-7, Western Michigan 23-3 and Colorado State 32-14 in that stretch.

In last Friday’s matchup versus San Diego State, the Spartans stuck with the Aztecs for five periods, but ultimately gave up the decisive score in double-overtime in a 19-13 loss. QB Nick Nash finished with 228 yards and a pick from 16-of-34 passing.

Over on the UNLV side, they’ve had some troubles finishing off games in the early part of the season. The Rebels opened the year with an OT loss 35-33 to Eastern Washington, then lost to Arizona State 37-10, Iowa State 48-3, Fresno State 38-30 and UTSA 24-17 in succession.

In the Utah State game, the Rebels had a 17-7 lead after the first quarter but could only find the end zone once from there in a 28-24 defeat. Cameron Friel put up 107 pass yards with an interception, and Charles Williams did most of the offensive work on 221 yards and three scores from 27 carries.

The Spartans are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 in October and 1-5 ATS in their last six overall. San Jose State is 9-3-2 ATS in their last 14 after an ATS win as well.

Meanwhile, the Rebels are 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall. UNLV is 3-1-1 ATS in their last five conference games.

PICK: I’m going to try San Jose State here. The Spartans put up a strong effort against a good San Diego State team back on Friday, holding the Aztecs to just 240 total yards, 17 first downs and 3.6 yards per play. San Jose State played a sloppy game however, committing 12 penalties for 101 yards.

As for UNLV, they fizzled out after the first quarter in their last outing, notching just 111 pass yards and 12 first downs. If San Jose State puts the clamps down on defense again in this one, it’s going to be hard for the Rebels to do much on the scoreboard.
