The Troy Trojans meet the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday in week 12 Sun Belt college football action from Troy University Veterans Memorial Stadium. App State just finished up a game versus South Alabama. The Mountaineers posted a big win there. As for Troy, they played Louisiana in their last game. In that one the Trojans fell by 14 points. App State began the year on a solid 4-1 run with wins over East Carolina, Elon, Marshall and Georgia State. The Mountaineers hit a 3-1 stride after that, losing to Louisiana before wins over Coastal Carolina, LA-Monroe and Arkansas State.

In the South Alabama game, the Mountaineers scored 17 unanswered points in the second half on the way to a 31-7 victory. QB Chase Brice finished with 195 yards, two TDs and two picks. Camerun Peoples finished on 90 yards from 23 carries to lead the rush.

Over on the Troy side, they went 2-3 over their first five this year, losing to Liberty, LA-Monroe and South Carolina along the way. In the next four the Trojans lost to Coastal Carolina while otherwise beating GA Southern, Texas State and South Alabama.

Last weekend versus Louisiana, the Trojans had just a one-point deficit going into halftime but couldn’t keep it up in a 35-21 defeat. QB Gunnar Watson posted 350 yards with one score and an interception. Tez Johnson finished with six catches for 83 yards and a TD.

The Mountaineers are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall and 4-0 ATS in their last four conference games. App State is 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.

Meanwhile, the Trojans are 3-7 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 2-5 ATS in their last seven overall. Troy is 1-6 ATS in their last seven in November.

PICK: I’m sticking with App State. The Mountaineers put up a pretty good effort against South Alabama, with 330 total yards, 5.2 yards per play and a perfect 3-of-3 on fourth-down tries. That said, Appalachian State did commit eight penalties and cough up four turnovers. They’re going to have to be more careful moving forward.

As for Troy, they did a decent job against Louisiana in the first half of their last game, however the team ultimately couldn’t keep up. The Trojans gave away three turnovers, but didn’t really have a terrible offensive day. Still, I don’t think they’ll cover here.
