The Florida Atlantic Owls and Charlotte 49ers clash Saturday in week 0 college football action from FAU Stadium. The 49ers are coming off a sketchy season in 2021, going 5-7 overall and finishing out of bowl contention. As for Florida Atlantic, they posted a 5-7 record last year as well, leaving the team far down the Conference USA standings. Charlotte took a small step forward in 2021, improving on their 2020 record (2-4) with a 5-7 overall mark and a 3-5 finish in Conference USA play. That result left the 49ers just one spot out of the basement in the East Division, just above FIU at 0-8.

Things started out pretty well for the 49ers last year. They won four of their first six games and went into October with high hopes. Unfortunately, Charlotte would end up losing five of their final six outings, with most of the games not being close on the scoreboard.

Over on the Florida Atlantic side, they had something of a down year themselves, at 5-7 overall and 3-5 in Conference USA games. The Owls finished two spots out of last place in the East Division, above both Charlotte and FIU, but out of bowl contention.

Florida Atlantic had a similar run last year with the early success: the Owls won five of their first eight games, but once November hit, the team didn’t win another outing. FAU fell in their final four appearances to Marshall, Old Dominion, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee.

PICK: I’m going to stay with Florida Atlantic, but probably not going near this one. The Owls certainly have some issues to address from last year. Everything was going fairly well up until November, but the offensive collapse during the final four games was too much to overcome. FAU didn’t have great pass protection and their running game was inconsistent. The good news is that the Owls get a solid group of veterans back on the offensive line, which should provide room for the likes of Johnny Ford and Nebraska transfer Marvin Scott to find some rush yardage. Charlotte should provide a good early barometer that we can measure FAU against, so this one is looking like a really fun matchup.
