The North Carolina Tar Heels and Virginia Tech Hokies clash Saturday in week 5 ACC college football action from Kenan Memorial Stadium. Virginia Tech is coming off a matchup versus West Virginia. The Hokies lost that one by 23 points. As for North Carolina, they played Notre Dame over the weekend. The Tar Heels ended up losing by double-digits. Virginia Tech kicked off the year versus Old Dominion, ultimately falling 20-17 in a tough result. The Hokies got a win in their second outing versus Boston College 27-10, then kept it rolling with another victory in game three versus Wofford 27-7.

In the Thursday matchup versus West Virginia, the Hokies again had issues. Virginia Tech was down 16-10 heading into the fourth quarter, where they were outscored 17-0 in a 33-10 loss. QB Grant Wells finished with 193 yards, one TD and one interception.

Over on the North Carolina side, they got their offense rolling early on this year, posting a 56-24 win over Florida A&M in the opener. The Tar Heels would continue rolling with a tight win 63-61 over App State and a 35-28 result over Georgia State in game three.

Matched up against Notre Dame on Saturday, the Tar Heels gave up 24 points in the second quarter alone during a 45-32 loss. QB Drake Maye threw five touchdowns with 301 yards on 17-of-32 passing. Antoine Green led the receivers with 150 yards and two scores off three catches.

PICK: I’m probably staying with North Carolina but not touching this one. The Tar Heels gave up a truckload of offense to Notre Dame in their last game. UNC coughed up 576 total yards, 6.8 yards per play and 35 first downs. North Carolina did some decent things on the other side but it was nowhere near enough for the win.

As for Virginia Tech, they couldn’t get out of their own way in the West Virginia game, committing a whopping 15 penalties for 132 yards and going just 2-of-10 on third-down tries. The Hokies have had a couple of good showings so far this year, but I don’t think this will be one of them.
