The Memphis Tigers and Houston Cougars do battle Friday in a AAC week 6 college football game from Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Houston is coming off a matchup versus Tulane. In that one the Cougars fell in overtime. As for Memphis, they played Temple in their last game. The Tigers took a 21-point win. Houston kicked off their season with a 37-35 overtime win over UTSA. The Cougars played another OT game against Texas Tech in their second outing but lost 33-30. After a 48-30 loss to Kansas, Houston managed to beat Rice 34-27 in game four.
In their matchup versus Tulane, Houston scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime but eventually fell 27-24. QB Clayton Tune put up 208 yards and two scores, while Brandon Campbell managed 66 yards and a TD on 19 carries.
Over on the Memphis side, they took a sizable loss to Mississippi State in their opener 49-23, but then bounced back with a 37-13 win over Navy in game two. The Tigers were able to keep the wins going from there with victories 44-32 over Arkansas State and 44-34 over North Texas.
Matched up against Temple on Saturday, the Tigers couldn’t score in the first half but got better from there in a 24-3 win. Quarterback Seth Henigan logged 195 yards with a TD, and Brandon Thomas had 20 yards rushing with a pair of touchdowns.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Memphis. The Tigers need to recover from that tepid first half versus Temple, though. Memphis eventually logged 331 yards and 22 first downs but averaged just 3.7 yards per play. The defense was solid however; the Tigers held the Owls to just seven first downs and a 2-of-16 rate on third-down tries.
As for Houston, they succumbed to a pretty good Tulane team with a few bad breaks along the way. The good news is that the Cougars notched a decent 383 yards and 22 first downs in the loss. This should be a pretty interesting matchup and a close game overall.
