The Navy Midshipmen and Houston Cougars meet Saturday in week 8 AAC college football action from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Houston is coming off an open week. The Cougars last met up with Memphis in a one-point victory. As for Navy, they played SMU back on Friday. In that one the Midshipmen lost by six points. Houston kicked off the year with a couple of OT games: a win over UTSA 37-35 and a loss to Texas Tech 33-30. The Cougars would then lose to Kansas 48-30 before a 34-27 win over Rice. Houston lost in another overtime game September 30, falling 27-24 to Tulane.

In the Memphis matchup, Houston was down 20-7 going into the final quarter. The Cougars scored 26 points in a wild final period to notch a 33-32 comeback win. QB Clayton Tune finished with 366 yards, three scores and a pick. Samuel Brown added 116 yards on nine catches.

Over on the Midshipmen’s side, they took a couple of losses to start out the year, 14-7 to Delaware and 37-13 to Memphis. Navy got their first win 23-20 over East Carolina in OT before a loss to Air Force 13-10 and another win 51-21 over Tulsa.

In the SMU matchup, Navy was down 33-14 after three frames. The Midshipmen scored 20 points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t come back in a 40-34 loss.

PICK: I’m likely going to take a stab on Houston, but also likely staying away. The Cougars get credit for the plucky comeback against Memphis, but they gave up 438 total yards and 25 points on the way there. Overall Houston has been pretty solid on offense though; they’ve hit 30 or more points in five of six games so far (24 in the outlier).

As for Navy, they gave up a ton of passing yards (336) to SMU, allowing the Mustangs to average 9.2 yards per play. The good news is that Navy kept up their ground game with 372 rush yards, but if Houston can stand tall against the run in this matchup the Cougars should be fine for a cover.
