The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Illinois Fighting Illini clash Saturday in week 9 Big Ten college football action from Memorial Stadium, Lincoln. Illinois is fresh off an open week. The Illini last appeared in a win over Minnesota. As for Nebraska, they had a bye last weekend as well. The Cornhuskers lost to Purdue in their last outing. Illinois opened up the year with a blowout win over Wyoming, but then fell 23-20 in a rough matchup versus Indiana. The Illini bounced back with a win streak from there, taking out Virginia, Chattanooga, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota in succession.

In the Minnesota game back on October 15, the Illini put up points in every quarter during an eventual 26-14 victory. QB Tommy Devito managed 252 yards with a score. Chase Brown led the rush with 41 attempts for 180 yards.

Over on the Nebraska side, they lost three of their first four games this year to Northwestern, Georgia Southern and Oklahoma (with a win over North Dakota). The Cornhuskers managed wins over Indiana and Rutgers before falling 43-37 to Purdue.

Back on October 15 versus Purdue, the Cornhuskers were outscored 27-13 in the first half. Nebraska got better from there but still lost 43-37. QB Casey Thompson managed 354 yards with two TDs and two picks. Trey Palmer led the rush with a lone 60-yard carry.

PICK: I’m likely going to stay with Illinois. The Illini have earned a lot of respect this year with their solid play; only two games have really been close so far, and the team is generally scoring pretty well. In the Minnesota matchup, Illinois posted 472 total yards, 27 first downs and 40:04 in time of possession. The Illini held the Gophers to just 180 total yards and 12 first downs on the other side.

As for Nebraska, they get credit for a second-half resurgence against Purdue in their last outing but it was still a disappointing loss. The Cornhuskers still have plenty to work on; they gave up a whopping 608 yards and 38 first downs to the Boilermakers in the defeat. Playing Illinois won’t be any easier.
