The San Jose State Spartans and Nevada Wolf Pack meet Saturday in week 9 MWC college football action from Spartan Stadium. Nevada played San Diego State in their last game. In that matchup the Wolf Pack lost by 16 points. As for San Jose State, their most recent game against New Mexico State was postponed due to tragic circumstances. Nevada opened up the year with a couple of wins, 23-12 over New Mexico State and 38-14 versus Texas State. The Wolf Pack would hit a losing streak after that however, falling to Incarnate Word, Iowa, Air Force, Colorado State and Hawaii in succession.

In the San Diego State game, the Wolf Pack took a 13-7 deficit into the break. Nevada failed to score after that and took a 23-7 loss in the end. QB Shane Illingworth put up 181 yards with a TD and a pick. Toa Taua bagged 43 yards on 12 carries to lead the rush.

Over on the San Jose State side, they beat Portland State 21-17 in their opener, then fell to Auburn 24-16 in game two. The Spartans bounced back with a win streak over Western Michigan, Wyoming and UNLV before a 17-10 loss to Fresno State.

San Jose State was originally scheduled to play New Mexico State in the Aggies’ homecoming game last weekend, but the matchup was postponed due to the sudden and tragic death of freshman running back Camdan McWright in a downtown traffic accident.

PICK: I’m probably sticking with San Jose State, but staying away. It won’t be easy for the Spartans to get back to business after McWright’s sudden passing, but once they get back on the field everything should fall into place. San Jose State had a three-game stretch of 33 or more points going before their loss 17-10 to Fresno State, and if they play well the Spartans should be able to post a nice total here as well.

As for Nevada, they were pretty tepid on offense in their loss to San Diego State, posting 227 total yards with just 14 first downs, two turnovers and a 3-of-14 rate on third-down tries. This matchup will likely be an uphill battle as well.
