The Texas State Bobcats and Southern Miss Golden Eagles meet Saturday in week 8 college football action from TSU Bobcat Stadium. Southern Miss is fresh off a matchup versus Arkansas State. In that one the Golden Eagles eked out a one-point victory. As for Texas State, they played Troy in their last game. In that one the Bobcats fell by three points. Southern Miss kicked off the season with a couple of losses, 29-27 (OT) to Liberty and 30-7 to Miami-FL. The Golden Eagles would then take out Northwest State 64-10 and Tulane 27-24 before falling 27-10 to Troy.
In the Arkansas State game, the Eagles were down 19-7 going into the fourth quarter. Southern Miss surged for 13 points from there in a 20-19 comeback win. QB Zach Wilcke posted 132 yards, one TD and two picks. Franke Gore Jr. added 19 carries for 96 yards and a score.
Over on the Texas State side, they went 3-3 over their first half-dozen games of the year, alternating wins with losses in that stretch. The victories were over FIU, Houston Baptist and Appalachian State; the losses were to Nevada, Baylor and James Madison.
Matched up against Troy over the weekend, Texas State was up 14-10 going into the final quarter. The Bobcats couldn’t hang on however, and fell 17-14. QB Layne Hatcher posted 207 yards with a TD, and Lincoln Pare had 18 carries for 67 rush yards and a TD.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Southern Miss. The Eagles had a pretty good day on offense (despite two picks) against Arkansas State over the weekend. Southern Miss ended up with 345 total yards, 22 first downs and 5.0 yards per play. It was a nice bounce-back effort after just 10 points versus Troy the week before.
As for Texas State, they were outclassed in just about every category versus Troy with 293 total yards, 13 first downs and a rough 5-of-15 on third-down tries. The Bobcats get credit for keeping it close with some opportunistic defense, and they’ll need to keep that up if they want to stay close in this one.
