The Charlotte 49ers and William & Mary Tribe square off Friday in week 1 college football action from Jerry Richardson Stadium.
The William & Mary Tribe will be looking to build on the decent 2021 season, finishing the year at 6-5 overall, including a 4-4 mark in CAA conference play. Darius Wilson is back at QB for the Tribe after emerging as the CAA offensive rookie of the year as a massive dual-threat QB for William & Mary. Bronson Yoder and Donavyn Lester also return to provide the Tribe with one of the most potent ground attacks in the FCS, but the thing about Wilson is that he will have to cut down on the turnovers and show progression towards improving his passing game after throwing more INTs (8) than TDs (6) last season. On defense, Nate Lynn is back after leading William & Mary with 12 sacks last season while leading tackler and senior linebacker, Trey Watkins, is also back after recording 79 total tackles last season. Tye Freeland and Ryan Poole also return to anchor the Tribe’s secondary in 2022 as well.
The Charlotte 49ers sill look to bounce back after starting the year with a 43-13 loss to FAU last time out, falling to 0-1 on the year. Chris Reynolds threw for 196 yards and a pair of TDs on 14 of 19 passing, while Shadrick Byrd rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries. Grant DuBose led the 49ers with 89 receiving yards and a pair of TDs with his 4 grabs, while Victor Tucker had a team-high 5 grabs for 75 yards as well in the losing effort. On defense, Davondre Robinson led the 49ers with 7 total tackles, including 4 solo tackles in the loss.
The Tribe are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The 49ers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The under is 5-2 in Tribe last 7 games overall. The over is 4-1 in 49ers last 5 games overall.
The Charlotte 49ers should be better at home than they were last week on the road, but that’s not saying a lot. Charlotte showed nothing on either side of the ball, and it’s not like FAU is a powerhouse this season. The William & Mary Tribe are coming off a decent season a year ago, and they pack a punch on the defensive side. Charlotte losing this outright should surprise nobody. There’s value with the free touchdown.
