The Georgia Southern Eagles and Morgan State Bears clash Saturday in week 1 college football action from Paulson Stadium. The Bears are coming off a rough season in 2021, going just 2-9 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC. As for Georgia Southern, they put up a spotty year themselves. The Eagles went 3-9 and 2-6 in the Sun Belt. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.

Morgan State certainly has some ground to make up after a rough campaign in 2021. The Bears posted an ugly 2-9 overall record and a 1-4 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. That left the team in last place in the conference standings.

The Bears’ year started off on a rough run. Morgan State lost their first eight games of the year and didn’t get a victory until November 4 versus Delaware State. After another loss to Albany, Morgan State did end the season on a high note with a win over Georgetown 28-21.

Over on the Georgia Southern side, they had a rough campaign in 2021 as well. The Eagles went 3-9 overall and 2-6 in Sun Belt games. That mark left the team in last place in the East Division and only bested Arkansas State (1-7) in the conference.

Georgia Southern Started the year with wins over Gardner-Webb and Arkansas State bookending a three-game losing streak. The Eagles would only win one of their remaining seven games, a 38-30 affair versus Texas State on November 13.

PICK: I’m probably staying with Georgia Southern, but that’s a thick line. There seem to be brighter days in store for the Eagles in 2022. The team gets eight starters back on offense and six back on the defensive side, so they’ll have experience right out of the gate. Sixth-year QB transfer Kyle Vantrease should be a steady player for Georgia Southern, and there are plenty of receivers to work with like Khaleb Hood (35 catches; 442 yards last year). If the line can find enough room for the ground game to work, the Eagles should have a pretty solid all-around offensive unit in 2022. That should be plenty to get them by in this one.
