Norfolk State had their ups and downs last season, eventually posting a 6-5 overall record. The Spartans went just 2-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference however, leaving the team in fourth place in the standings ahead of only Howard and Morgan State.

In their 2022 opener versus Marshall, the Spartans were down 38-0 after one half and it only got worse in a 55-3 blowout loss. Otto Kuhns and Jaylan Adams combined for just 84 passing yards, and Jason Wonodi led the receivers on two catches for 50 yards.

Over on the James Madison side, they posted a solid 12-2 overall record last year. The Dukes were 7-1 in the CAA, which put the team atop the standings alongside Villanova. James Madison’s season came to an end with a 20-14 loss to North Dakota State in the FCS Playoffs.

Back on Saturday versus Middle Tennessee, the Dukes scored 21 in the second quarter and 16 more in the third during a 44-7 win. QB Todd Centeio managed 287 yards with six touchdowns and also led the rush with 110 yards. Kris Thornton caught 12 balls for 155 yards and three scores as well.

PICK: I’m probably staying with James Madison here. The Dukes put up a dominant effort in their opener, bagging 548 total yards with 6.4 yards per play and a whopping 31 first downs. JMU also kept the ball under control with zero turnovers and only five punts.

As for Norfolk State, there aren’t many positives to take away from their blowout loss in week one. The Spartans had just 114 yards of offense, five first downs and a 1-of-12 run on third-down tries. This is going to be another tough game if Norfolk State can’t get it together.
