Stephen F. Austin kicked off the season with a matchup versus Jacksonville State. The Lumberjacks were outscored 21-0 in the second half in that one during a 42-17 loss. QB Trae Self finished with 135 yards, two scores and a pick on 14-of-29 passing in that one.

In game two versus Alcorn State, the Lumberjacks scored in every quarter on the way to a 31-27 win. QB Trae Self managed 226 yards and three scores. Jerrell Wimbley led the rush on 83 yards and a TD, and also caught three balls for 67 yards to top the receivers.
Over on the Louisiana Tech side, they had a forgettable campaign in 2021, going just 3-9 overall. The Bulldogs went 2-6 in Conference USA play, which put the team in last place in the West Division standings and ahead of only FIU (0-8) in the conference.

In their first action of the 2022 season, the Bulldogs had an early lead on Missouri but ultimately were steamrolled 52-24. QB Matthew Downing had 194 yards, one TD and three interceptions. Cyrus Allen led the receivers with 121 yards and two scores off five catches.

PICK: I might take a stab on Stephen F. Austin here. This should be a fun matchup regardless, though. The Lumberjacks posted 379 total yards against Alcorn State, notching 22 first downs and a nice 36:52 in time of possession. There are some things to work on this week however—namely the 11 penalties—but it was a nice win nonetheless.

As for Louisiana Tech, they were outmatched against Missouri in their opener but the team still did a few things well in garbage time. The Bulldogs really need to get a handle on the turnovers (three picks) and penalties (nine for 65 yards) before they hit the field again.
