The NC State Wolfpack and Charleston Southern Buccaneers meet Saturday in week 2 college football action from Carter-Finley. Charleston Southern is fresh off an opener versus Western Carolina. In that matchup the Buccaneers lost a high-scoring affair. As for NC State, they played East Carolina in their first game. The Wolfpack would end up eking out a tight victory. Charleston Southern didn’t have a great season in 2021. The Bucs finished 4-6 overall and 3-4 in Big South play. That would leave the team in fifth place in the conference amid a logjam of other teams behind Kennesaw State (7-0) and Monmouth (6-1).

In their opener versus Western Carolina, Charleston Southern kept pace in the second half but couldn’t overcome the Catamounts in a 52-38 loss. QB Ross Malmgren managed 392 yards with five scores and a pick, while Seth Anderson had 131 yards and two scores off eight grabs.

Over on the NC State side, they did fairly well in a tough conference last year. The Wolfpack went 9-3 overall and hit a 6-2 run in ACC play. NC State would end up in second place in the Atlantic Division. A planned Holiday Bowl versus UCLA was cancelled due to virus issues.

Matched up against East Carolina last weekend, the Wolfpack failed to score in the second half but still hung on for the 21-20 win. QB Devin Leary finished with 211 yards, one TD and one pick. Demie Sumo was the team’s top rusher on 79 yards and a score from 14 carries.

PICK: I’m probably leaning NC State here but not touching it. The Wolfpack barely escaped a surprisingly stout East Carolina team in their opener. The Wolfpack was out-gained in total yardage 383-344, coughed up two turnovers, had eight penalties and went a sketchy 4-of-13 on third downs. Needless to say it wasn’t exactly a dominant effort. That said, NC State should have an opportunity to get their offense going in this matchup. The Buccaneers gave up a whopping 616 yards against WCU in a high-scoring shootout during Week 1.
