The Baylor Bears and Texas State Bobcats clash Saturday night in week 3 college football action from McLane Stadium. The Bobcats are fresh off a meeting with FIU. Texas State ended up taking a blowout win in that one. As for Baylor, they played BYU in their last matchup. The Bears would go on to fall in overtime. Texas State had some trouble with Nevada in their first outing of the year, giving up 24 points in the third quarter on the way to a rough 38-14 loss. QB Layne Hatcher managed 289 yards with two TDs and two interceptions, and Ashtyn Hawkins had 96 yards and two scores on 10 grabs.

Matched up against FIU in game two, the Bobcats jumped out to a 20-6 halftime lead and rolled to a 41-12 finish. QB Layne Hatcher managed 226 yards and three scores with a pick, and Calvin Hill rushed 28 times for 195 yards and a TD of his own.

Over on the Bears’ side, they didn’t have any trouble with Albany in their first matchup of the year. Baylor scored double-digit points in each quarter on the way to a 69-10 win. QB Blake Shapen posted 214 yards and two scores on 17-of-20 passing in the victory.

In their second outing versus BYU, the Bears forced OT with a fourth-quarter touchdown but ultimately lost 26-20 after double overtime. QB Blake Shapen had 137 yards and a score. Craig Williams added 68 rush yards, and Hal Presley led the receivers on 31 yards.

PICK: I’m probably going back to Baylor here. The Bears nearly toppled a great BYU team on the road in their last game, but they were stifled by just 137 passing yards, 3.6 yards per play and a whopping 14 penalties for 117 yards (BYU had nine penalties of their own in a chippy matchup). Still, the Bears have some positives to build on moving forward, like the 22 first downs, zero turnovers and 34:15 time of possession. Texas State should be able to hang in here for a while, but I like the Bears to take out their frustrations in a big win.
