Nebraska Cornhuskers Vs. Wyoming Cowboys Free Pick 8/31/13
2013-08-31 07:00:00 EDT
The Nebraska Cornhuskers will be looking to return to the Big Ten Championship this season, and that starts on Saturday when the Huskers host the Wyoming Cowboys in their seasons opener.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers should have one of the most dynamic offenses in the nation this season with Taylor Martinez under center. The Huskers run a balanced attack, that uses a lot of different formations, and spread-option principles to attack defenses. The Huskers definitely aren’t the most dynamic passing team around, but with a ground attack that should be as good as it gets in the Big Ten, the play action pass is always at threat. Defensively the Huskers were disappointing last season, and when Nebraska hired Bo Pelini they were definitely expecting a defense that resembled the Blackshirts of the past. The Huskers allowed more than 27 points per game on average last season, a number that needs to improve if this Nebraska team wants to contend with the Wolverines and the Buckeyes for the top spot in the Big Ten.
The Wyoming Cowboys went just 4-8 last season, and will be trying to improve upon that in 2013. The Cowboys had a decent offense, that was able to move the ball, but the Cowboys had problems translating those yards into points on the board. The biggest problem last season for the Cowboys however was their defensive play as Wyoming gave up more than 33 points per game on average, giving the Cowboys the 99th ranked scoring defense in the nation. Wyoming has a favorable schedule this season, and if Wyoming can avoid mistakes, and be more efficient offensively this team definitely has the ability to improve upon those four wins from a season ago.
The Cowboys have played well on the road the past few seasons, going a solid 7-5 overall, while being an impressive 9-3 against the spread in that span. The Huskers have one of the best home field advantages in the nation, and it shows in their record as the Huskers are 13-1 in their last 14 home games. The Huskers haven’t been that solid of a play at home however, as in those 14 games the Huskers are just 7-6-1 against the line.

Again, this is a big number to be giving up for the opening week. If you follow me, you know I love underdogs, but I just can’t go against the Huskers in this spot. Nebraska should be able to move the ball at will against the Cowboys, as I just don’t trust this Wyoming defense. Wyoming will likely be able to move the ball on the Blackshirts, at least somewhat, but it won’t be enough to keep this one close as the Huskers should be able name the score on Saturday.
