Western Michigan Broncos vs. Kent State Golden Flashes Free Pick - 9/28/13

Waldo Stadium and the Western Michigan Broncos host the Kent State Golden Flashes.
At 1-3 to kick off 2013 I think it’s safe to say this isn’t the same Kent State squad from a year ago. This season’s version is not nearly as impressive and especially so with Dri Archer and linemen Pat McShane injured. Without their biggest offensive threat the Golden Flashes were easy pickings for Penn State who scored a 34-0 decision. Aside from the scoreboard KSU had literally no offense with 190 yards and nine first downs with only 56 rushing yards and less then 2 1/2 yard average for a team that was geat on the ground a year ago. The air was no friendlier with Colin Reardon going just 12-28 for 100 yards which put a sizable burden on the defense which couldn’t hold up with the Nittany Lions having their way.
An 0-4 start to begin the season is not what Western Michigan had in mind but the numbers tell the the story with the offense unable to find the end zone with opponents not having the same problem. A 59-3 loss to Iowa was an across the board melt down between the offense, defense and special teams. The Broncos totaled 209 yards and made matters much worse with four turnovers to a Hawkeyes squad that didn’t need help. Tyler VanTubbergen (14-32/114) struggled throughout with both of his interceptions ending up in his own end zone. Iowa also returned back to back punts for scores as well leading to a 38-3 half time bulge which essentially was game over.
The numbers might say these teams are about on par with one another but Kent State has a big advantage if Archer plays and if he does I will gladly take the points and the best player on the field…
