Breaking Down the NC State Wolfpack Win Total
2020-04-28 14:00:00 EDT
The NC State Wolfpack will be on the verge of a bowl berth in the 2020 college football season if everything goes according to plan.
NC State had a pretty disappointing football season in 2019. The Wolfpack finished 4-8 overall and had the worst conference record in the ACC at just 1-7. This season, NC State will be looking to improve their standing in the conference, and if all goes well maybe even earn a trip to a bowl game. Let’s take a closer look at NC State’s current status and break down their chances at hitting six wins in 2020.
Make no mistake about it, the ACC was a highly difficult place to play football last season. Only four teams had better than a .500 record, and the continuous conference battles wreaked havoc on several teams’ bowl chances. That said, NC State was still pretty bad; they’d been picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic in the preseason media poll, but only managed the one conference victory over Syracuse as the Wolfpack struggled offensively over the final eight games of the season.
Head coach Dave Doeren returns to NC State for his eighth season at the helm. He’ll be joined by DC Tony Gibson once again, and new offensive coordinator Tim Beck joins the fray along with George McDonald (in his second season). That crew is going to have to find some efficient ways to score, or else this is going to be another long season for the Wolfpack. Defensively, NC State will have some high-profile holes to plug as well, since DT Larrell Murchison and DE James Smith-Williams were both selected in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The good news for NC State is a fairly permissive schedule. The team will get an early trial by fire with two road games in their first three appearances, but just about every game leading up to the October 17 Clemson road matchup should be winnable on paper. After the bye, NC State runs into some more potential victories as the mid- to lower-level ACC teams start popping up. Outside of the Louisville matchup, the conference games here don’t seem too bad.
Pick: I’m going with the over. If the number were a little higher here I’d rethink, but six victories seems doable for this NC State team. Sure, they’re bound to have some bumps in the road during the season, but they’ve got about as permissive a schedule as any ACC team is likely to get. With a few confidence-building early-season victories, the Wolfpack could be well on their way to a bowl game if all goes according to plan.
