The Arkansas Razorbacks come into the 2020 season looking to shake off what was another disappointing season in Fayetteville last year.

The Hogs went just 2-10, including a second straight winless 0-8 mark in conference play. Arkansas fell to 2-8 after a loss to Western Kentucky, leading to the firing of then-head coach Chad Morris. Arkansas went on a search in the offseason and determined that Sam Pittman would be their guy after spending a few years with the Georgia Bulldogs after his first stint as an assistant head coach at Arkansas from 2013-2015. The good news for Arkansas is that the coaching staff that was put together is a pretty good one, with Pittman at head coach as he can also help develop the talent on the offensive line, while Kendal Briles will coordinate the offense after seasons at FAU, Houston and Florida State over the last three seasons. Briles will need to figure out if K.J Jefferson can lead the charge under center or if the Hogs can turn to former Florida QB Feleipe Franks to come in to spark the team for the 2020 season. Arkansas also brings back leading rusher Rakeem Boyd as well as top receivers from last year’s team like Mike Woods, Treylon Burks and Trey Knox. Defensively, Barry Odom was one of the top coordinator hires for Arkansas, so the Hogs may have picked up a gem in that department as well.

The bad news is that Odom takes over a defense that finished bottom or second-worst in the SEC in terms of scoring defense in each of the last three seasons. The unit doesn’t lose much experience, but the Hogs lost some serious depth at each level of the defense with Kamren Curl, McTelvin Agim and De’Jon Harris all gone from the Arkansas roster in 2020 with Agim and Curl being selected in the 2020 NFL draft. The defensive front also takes another hit with Jamario Bell graduating from the program.

The total for Arkansas this season is set at 3.5 wins, and the fact that it’s at even money lends me to think that Arkansas can break through the winless threshold in SEC play. However, while I can see wins over Nevada, Charleston Southern and Louisiana-Monroe, I don’t see the rest of the schedule being as kind. Notre Dame is probably a rout in favor of the Irish, a road game at Mississippi State and a “neutral site” game against Texas A&M in the Lone Star State might as well be a road game. Add in games against Alabama, LSU and Auburn which are probably marks in the L column and games against Tennessee, Ole Miss and Missouri which I also think the Hogs drop as well. Ultimately, another winless mark in conference play and a 3-9 overall record this season, leaving Arkansas coming in under the projected total at the end of the year.
