Breaking Down the Southern Miss Golden Eagles Win Total
2020-05-06 18:00:00 EDT
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are expected to be strong contenders for a bowl berth in the 2020 college football season.
Southern Miss had a pretty solid football campaign in 2019, but everything ended on a sour note. The Golden Eagles went 7-6 overall last year, earning a trip to the Armed Forces Bowl, but fell 30-13 to Tulane. This season, Southern Miss will try to make their way back to a bowl game and get a victory this time. Let’s take a closer look at Southern Miss’ current status and break down their chances at hitting eight victories this season.
Southern Miss went 5-3 in Conference USA play last year, which is a pretty respectable total considering how competitive things were. What hurt the Eagles most were late-season losses to Western Kentucky 28-10 and at Florida Atlantic 34-17. It was a pair of games that derailed Southern Miss’ division title hopes, and hurt even worse since the Eagles had gone 5-1 in their half-dozen games prior.
In any case, head coach Jay Hopson is back at the helm for Southern Miss in his fifth season. He’ll have new coordinators in 2020: Matt Kubik on offense; Scotty Walden and Tony Pecoraro on the defensive side. The good news is that crew will bring back quarterback Jack Abraham, who threw for almost 3,500 yards last season. The Eagles are missing a few receivers from that group, but Tim Jones and Jaylond Adams should have big roles in 2020.
Looking at the schedule, there are plenty of opportunities for victories. Southern Miss opens up with three winnable games, but then have to travel to Auburn and North Texas before returning home for FAU. The Eagles have the benefit of a later-season open week, where they can rest and regroup before hitting the road in two of their last three outings. Those last few games will likely be key for Southern Miss’ bowl eligibility.
Pick: I like the over here. I’m thinking Southern Miss will be able to take a step forward in 2020, and there’s not much stopping them from eclipsing last year’s win total. There are a few potentially troubling spots on the schedule (like four road games in a five-game stretch at one point), but on the whole it looks favorable for the Eagles to hit eight or nine wins. If all goes well, Southern Miss should be able to gain some ground in the division standings as well. Their main rivals will probably be LA Tech and UAB, but the West is certainly up for grabs.
