Breaking Down the Utah Utes Win Total
2020-05-14 13:00:00 EDT

The Utah Utes are poised to be fighting it out near the top of the Pac-12 standings once again in the 2020 college football season.

Utah had a pretty good football season overall in 2019, but the last two games ended in disappointment. The Utes were 11-3 on the campaign, winning the South Division and making it to the Pac-12 Championship Game where they lost to Oregon 37-15. Utah earned an invite to the Alamo Bowl afterward, falling to Texas 38-10 to close out the season. The Utes are projected for another solid run this year and should be in the mix for the conference championship once again. Check back all season long for free college football picks and college football predictions at Sports Chat Place.

Let’s take a closer look at Utah’s current status and break down their chances at hitting nine wins this season.

The Utes have now won the South Division in consecutive years, lost the Pac-12 Championship Game in consecutive years, and lost the following bowl games in consecutive years. Those near-misses should give the Utes some additional motivation this season, and with an 8-1 Pac-12 record in 2019 Utah has the talent to back up those lofty aspirations. The Utes only lost one regular-season game last year (30-23 to USC on September 20) and aside from a 33-28 close call at Washington, Utah was in control on the field for most of the season. They simply wilted against stout competition in the final two games.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham returns to the Utah sideline for his 16th year in 2020. He’s joined by Andy Ludwig in his second season as OC and Morgan Scalley in his fifth year at the DC slot. The coaching staff will have some replacement selections to make, as QB Tyler Huntley and RB Zack Moss are gone. The good news is that Utah retains a strong offensive line that should facilitate a nice running game in 2020. The Utes have a few solid options at quarterback, and the defense should be capable once again like usual—despite the losses of some impact tacklers on that side of the ball.

The Utes get right to work on the schedule with an opener versus BYU. That will be a tone-setting matchup, and if Utah can get it right they should be in good shape for the next few games leading up to the rematch versus USC. There are a couple of tricky games down a little further—like Washington and Arizona State—but realistically this is a favorable schedule for the Utes, with relatively light non-conference opponents and no Oregon on the slate.

Pick: I like the over. Sure, Utah needs to make some tweaks with their skill players, but recently on a year-to-year basis this team always has a solid foundation. There’s more than enough talent on the roster to plug the holes in the lineup, and if this Utes squad can find a rhythm they’ll be dangerous to everyone they face. This is another prime year for Utah to make a run at a conference championship, and hopefully this time the end results will be better.
