The Baylor Bears and the Ole Miss Rebels meet Sunday, September 6 in college football action from NRG Stadium.

This game was originally scheduled for Saturday the 5th, but was moved back by a day—likely due to the higher potential ratings and/or the strange offseason. In any case, this should be a really great opener for both teams and a competitive game. Baylor is coming off an 11-3 season and should be decent once again in 2020, and while Ole Miss floundered in a tough SEC at 4-8 last year they’re no slouches either, thanks to a reinvigorated coaching staff. We should have a nice matchup here to begin the campaign. Get Free College Football Picks and College Football Predictions for every game all season long at Sports Chat Place.

Let’s take a closer look at both teams and see if we can get an early idea of how things may play out on September 6 between the Bears and the Rebels.

Baylor’s 11-3 record from 2019 looks great on the surface, but it’s tinged with some major disappointments. The Bears had only a single loss to Oklahoma in their first 12 games, but dropped the Big 12 Championship to the Sooners in OT, then fell to Georgia 26-14 in the Sugar Bowl. Considering how Baylor was projected to finish sixth in the conference however, the finish is pretty encouraging. Heading into this year, the Bears will have some retooling to do with their new offensive coordinator Larry Fedora. Big contributing receivers Denzel Mims and Chris Platt are gone, but Tyquan Thornton and RJ Sneed should be able to pick up most of that slack.

Over on the Ole Miss side, they struggled through a difficult schedule last year, falling to talented teams like California, Alabama, Auburn and LSU. The good news is that Ole Miss really didn’t get blown out in a whole lot of games, even against the elite opponents. The Rebels are further encouraged by the arrival of new head coach Lane Kiffin and new OC Jeff Lebby; they’re expected to do great things with QB Matt Corrall (1,363 pass yards and six TDs in 2019) and RB John Rhys Plumlee (1,023 rush yards and 12 scores last year). We can likely expect this passing game to spread the ball out more, so look for a host of different receivers to contribute to Ole Miss this season.

Pick: This one’s a little hard to judge, but I’m going to go with Baylor. Sure, the Bears have a lot of tweaking to do, and they’re probably not going to reach the lofty heights of last season, but they’ve got a strong enough core to bang out an important win in the opener here. I expect Ole Miss to be much improved, but given the weird offseason and the new philosophies it may take a few weeks for the Rebels to find their rhythm. This should be one of the best games of college football’s opening weeks, however.
