The Florida State Seminoles and the Boise State Broncos meet Saturday, September 19 in college football action from Albertsons Stadium.

Florida State is coming out of a 6-7 record last year, going 4-4 in the ACC. The Seminoles managed an invite to the Sun Bowl, where they fell to Arizona State 20-14. As for Boise State, they fared better at 12-2 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the Mountain West. The Broncos took out Hawaii 31-10 in the MW Championship Game but fell to Washington in the Las Vegas Bowl 38-7. Let’s take a closer look at both teams and see if we can get an idea of how things might play out when the Seminoles meet the Broncos on September 19.

Even with the bowl game appearance, Florida State had a forgettable campaign last year. Second-year head coach Willie Taggart was fired after losing to Miami-FL, and the Seminoles posted consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 1975-76. Head coach Mike Norvell will try to turn things around at Florida State. He’ll have to find some more offensive consistency, and that will start with QB James Blackman—who is without the services of Cam Akers this season. Blackman (and whomever ends up the RB1) will need the offensive line to step up and help out; that unit was pretty bad last season and one of the main culprits for Florida State’s scoring struggles.

Over on the Boise State side, they’re likely still reeling from that Las Vegas Bowl loss, but the good news is that the Broncos can take some pride in their flawless Mountain West run in 2019. Boise State’s only misstep outside of the bowl game was a 28-25 loss at BYU that easily could have gone differently. In any case, on to 2020, where head coach Bryan Harsin enters his seventh season. He’ll be tasked with helping QB Hank Bachmeier take the next step in his development, and that will include getting Khalil Shakir involved as the potential lead receiver now that John Hightower is gone. There are some questions involving the offensive line, but if Boise State can get that buttoned up they’ll be primed for another Mountain West championship.

Pick: Gotta go Boise State. As an early-look pick, the Broncos just seem like they’re in a better position heading into 2020. They’ll have to do some tweaking on both the offensive and defensive lines to find a good rotation, but the talent is there once again for Boise State, and they should spend the entire season nationally ranked.

As for the Seminoles, I think they’ll have a better season in 2020 and get back above .500 to boot. Florida State gets to warm up with decent-but-not-great teams West Virginia and Samford before coming into this game, so the Seminoles should be pretty comfortable by the time this matchup rolls around. Should be a good one; I like Boise by a score or so.
