The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Wisconsin Badgers meet Saturday, October 3 in college football action from Lambeau Field.
The Irish are coming off of a successful campaign in 2019, going 11-2 overall (first among independents) and beating Iowa State 33-9 in the Camping World Bowl. As for Wisconsin, they put up a 10-4 mark last season, taking the Big Ten’s West Division title. The Badgers lost in both the Big Ten Championship Game (34-21 to Ohio State) and the Rose Bowl (28-27 to Oregon) in a disappointing finish, however. Let’s take a closer look at both teams and see if we can get an idea of how things might play out when the Irish meet the Badgers on October 3.
There’s not a lot to complain about when it comes to Notre Dame’s 2019 season, unless you want to count a near-miss loss to Georgia 23-17 or an uncharacteristic road blowout by Michigan 45-14. The Irish didn’t have a whole lot of trouble outside of that, but it’s worth noting that they lost to two of the four ranked teams they faced. In any case, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly heads into his 11th season at the helm, and brings in new OC Tommy Rees. One of their main concerns this season will be finding reliable receivers for QB Ian Book, who is without Chase Claypool, Chris Finke and Cole Kmet this year. On the other side, the Irish could stand to bolster their secondary, as there’s no real shutdown cornerback at the moment to deal with the country’s top receivers. All things considered however, Notre Dame should field a nice team once again in 2020.
Over on the Wisconsin side, everything went smoothly during the 2019 regular season outside of a defeat by unranked Illinois 23-24 and a road loss to Ohio State 38-7. The Badgers posted solid victories over Michigan, Iowa and Minnesota last year, and though the last two games ended in disappointment Wisconsin was dealing with some of the top programs in the country. Badgers head coach Paul Chryst enters his sixth season in 2020, and on paper the road back to the conference championship looks manageable. The team will have to replace lead running back Jonathan Taylor, and QB Jack Coan has some healthy competition. Wisconsin needs some tweaks at wide receiver as well, with Quintez Cephus and AJ Taylor gone. Look for guys like Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis to get some extra reps in 2020.
Pick: Going Notre Dame. This is a tough one, especially as an early-look pick, because it should be a close game and both of these teams should be high-level programs once again this season. Wisconsin does have a fairly gentle incline of games before this No. 5 outing, with Indiana, Southern Illinois and Appalachian State leading into a matchup versus Michigan. The Badgers should be pretty well warmed up by the time October 3 roll around.
As for the Irish, I expect them to come out of the gate strong as well if they can get past the cross-continent opener versus Navy. Regardless, this should be a pretty great season for both teams and this one is a can’t-miss matchup.
