Breaking Down the Georgia Bulldogs Win Total

The Georgia Bulldogs are thinking SEC Title and beyond for the 2020 college football season.

Georgia managed a really strong football season in 2019. The Bulldogs finished 12-2 overall and 7-1 in the always-difficult SEC to narrowly win the East Division. In the SEC Championship Game Georgia fell to LSU 37-10 but did bounce back in the Sugar Bowl with a 26-14 win over Baylor. This year, Georgia is projected for double-digit wins and will be fighting for a spot in the conference championship game once again. There really isn’t much to be displeased with when it comes to the Bulldogs’ 2019 campaign. Georgia’s only regular-season loss really sticks out, though: a 20-17 double-overtime affair versus South Carolina at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs were able to regroup and win out afterward (with a few close calls along the way) prior to the SEC Championship Game, and realistically no one in the conference was on LSU’s level last year. All in all, it was a pretty great run, and now Georgia has a division title to defend against a Gators team hot on their heels.

Moving on to 2020, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart enters his fifth season at the helm along with second-year DC Dan Lanning and new offensive coordinator Todd Monken. The good news is that the coaching staff retains a major chunk of the defense from last year; the bad news is that they’ll have some reloading to do on offense, but being one of the nation’s top recruiting classes should soften that blow significantly.

Looking at the schedule, we’ve got the usual crew of power schools here and several intimidating matchups on Georgia’s slate. The Bulldogs start out with an intriguing game against Virginia in Atlanta, then ETSU and a tricky matchup at Alabama. A little further down the road are Auburn and a road game against a Missouri team that should be decent. The real fun begins with a showdown against Florida that could very well decide the fate of the East Division once again.

Pick: I like the over slightly better. Sure, 11 wins is a lot, but this Georgia team should be one of the top in the nation in 2020. Not having LSU on the schedule again helps, but the Tigers will be retooling as well and won’t look quite the same in 2020. Provided the Bulldogs make it back to the SEC Championship, that matchup could go very differently.

In any case, the big dogs on the schedule are Florida, Alabama and Auburn; Georgia is probably going to have to win at least two of those (including Florida) to have a strong shot at the division, which should be one of the most interesting in the nation this season. The Bulldogs should be good enough to get to 11 wins though, even among the most elite competition.
