The Liberty Flames enter the 2020 college football season looking to improve once again as the Flames took a solid step forward in 2019.

Liberty followed up their first FBS season that finished at 6-6 with an 8-5 record, including a 23-16 win over Georgia Southern in Liberty’s first bowl appearance in the Cure Bowl. Only time will tell if coach Hugh Freeze can keep the Flames hot in 2020 and keep Liberty football improving on the uptick. The bad news for Liberty is that a lot of their offense from the starting unit last year is gone with Stephen Calvert gone at QB and Antonio Gandy-Golden catching balls for the Washington Redskins next year in the NFL. The good news is that the Flames have options at QB, with Malik Willis transferring from Auburn and having done his time waiting a year. Brandon Robinson and Johnathan Bennett will each have their chances as well. The other problem for Liberty is that the defense needs retooling, with the top three tacklers gone but TreShaun Clark is back to lead Liberty’s pass rush. The Flames will have an undersized secondary as well, but the defensive backs will be quick that’s for sure.

The win total for Liberty is set at 6.5 and even with all of the changes on the offensive side and the problems on defense, I’m not sure how this number doesn’t go over even if it barely does. Assume the Virginia Tech, NC State and Syracuse games are all losses. Maybe FIU and Western Kentucky (which Liberty should at least split), NC A&T should be a win, as should be Bowling Green, ULM, Western Carolina, UConn and UMass. Southern Miss, FIU, and Western Kentucky are going to be the three games that decide the total, and I think Liberty wins at least one of those three to get to seven wins and get over the total. So give me the over 6.5 wins for Liberty this upcoming season.
