The 1-0 Long Beach State 49ers visit the 6th ranked Arizona Wildcats Monday night at 10PM on the PAC12 network.
Long Beach State kicked off their season Friday night with a comfortable, 71-59 win over Hawaii Pacific. The 49ers were able to use their size and depth to overcome what was a pretty poor shooting night overall (34%). The 49ers struggled mightily from behind the arc, going 6-27, but routinely were able to create transition points, forcing 19 Warrior turnovers for the game. Guard Mike Caffey led the 49ers with 27 points and 9 rebounds and Dan Jennings added 10 and 12 from the power forward slot. Long Beach State controlled a +26 advantage on the boards and saw 10 players get meaningful minutes in the win.

Arizona kicked off their 2013-14 season by getting past a relentless Cal Poly team 73-62. The Wildcats exchanged baskets with the Mustangs for about 10 minutes before pulling ahead for good at the half way mark of the first half. Despite only going eight deep for the game, the Wildcats were able to use their size advantage, out-rebounding and blocking 7 Cal Poly shots for the contest. Highly touted freshman Aaron Gordon was able to overcome a sore groin with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks to lead Zona. Gabe York and Nick Johnson combined for 23 points and 7 assists in the Arizona backcourt and the Wildcats shot an efficient 57% (24-42) for the game.
Both these teams got things underway Friday with cupcake opponents. I expect an increase in intensity and the Wildcats size and skill to be the differentiator here as Arizona relies on the front court combination of Ashley and Gordon to stymie the 49ers half court attack as Zona gets the win and the likely cover.
