The UAB Blazers and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights face off on Monday in college basketball action.
The UAB Blazers had a soft spot to open their 2013-2104 college baseball schedule as they crushed Columbus State. UAB led CSU by 23 at the half, doubling them up, and then they emptied the bench still winning comfortably by 20. C.J. Washington had 17 points and five rebounds, Chad Frazier has 12 points and 10 assists, and Rod Rucker has 12 points and Jordan Swing each had 12 points and six rebounds. Tosin Mehinti was UAB’s leading rebounder with 10. The Blazers shot 44.3 percent from the floor, 30.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 60 percent from the free throw line. UAB’s win was really no more than a glorified scrimmage but at leas they got the win and they can move on to tougher competition.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights also opened against soft competition as they beat FAMU by eight. Rutgers led by five at the half so most of their starters saw significant minutes. Kadeem Jack had 30 points and 12 rebounds, Myles Mack had 19 points, and J.J. Moore had 17 points and 11 rebounds. D’Von Campbell scored 10 points and Jerome Seaears scored nine. Rutgers outplayed FAMU in every area even though it wasn’t so apparent in the final score. Rutgers shot 48.4 percent from the floor, 31.6 percent from beyond the three-point line, and 68.6 percent from the free throw line. Rutgers is a year away from moving to the Big Ten.
UAB is 7-18 against the spread in their last 25 non-conference games, 1-4 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 0-5 against the spread in their last five games. Rutgers is 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, 4-1 against the spread in their last five games, and 0-5 against the spread after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.
This should be a close game and while I don’t love it from a wagering perspective I will take the points as it should be a squeaker either way.
