The fifth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks opened their 2013-14 campaign with a convincing 80-63 win over Louisiana-Monroe behind freshman phenom Andrew Wiggins’ 16 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. The budding Jayhawks also got 12 points and 4 boards from sophomore G Andrew White III and 12 points and 8 boards from sophomore F Perry Ellis. The Jayhawks, who this season have five new starters on the floor, three of which are freshman, eventually shook off some early rust to shoot 53 percent for the game after taking a ten-point lead into the half and allowing Warhawks to come within six points early in the second half before pulling away with a 15-5 run.
The #4 Duke Blue Devils opened their season in even grander fashion, stomping the Davidson Wildcats 111-77, shooting a lights-out 70.4 percent from the field and 61 percent from beyond the arc. Super freshman Jabari Parker scored 22 points in his debut, while soph. Rodney Hood, a Mississippi State transfer, had 22 points and 9 rebounds. The two young stars combined to go 17-of-20 from the field and five of the Blue Devils 13 three-pointers. Along with Parker and Hood, junior G Quinn Cook and soph. G Rasheed Sulaimon scored 21 and 20 points respectively, marking the first time in school history Duke has had four 20-point scorers. The Blue Devils reached another milestone in shooting 70.4 percent from the field, the sixth time in school history Duke shot over 70 percent from the field for an entire game.

In a game being played at the United Center in Chicago, Kansas opened up a 3.5 point home favorite. Duke travels really well so it’s hard to imagine them being outmanned in terms of fans in any neutral location. This game features the two best freshmen in the nation in Parker and Wiggins with the latter getting the upper hand. Look for Kansas to cover.
