The Drexel Dragons and Illinois State Redbirds look to rebound from season opening defeats.
Drexel suffered through a miserable 2012-13 season mosrtly due to injuries but with some of their key players back they gave UCLA a run for their money before falling 72-67 on opening day. The Dragons still did not play well with only 38% shooting and 5-23 on threes which hurt them a year ago while the Bruins connected at 46%. Drexel did hang tough on the glass and went to the foul line which kept the game competitive. Frantz Massenat led all scorers with 20 points and five helpers while hitting on 8-16 with Damion Lee tossed in 17 and grabbed seven boards followed by an eleven point, five point pull night from Chris Fouch but the latter two shot a combined 8-33 from the field.

Illinois State was a bit of an unknown heading in to their season opener as one of the better scoring teams in the Missouri Valley lost most of their production from a year ago and were sporting numerous new faces. Breaking in a new squad against Virginia Commonwealth wasn't an ideal situation on paper and that translated to the court where the Rams ran away with a 96-58 decision. VCU connected at overs 55% with the Redbirds at 31% while ISU struggled with 21 giveaways and a 4-23 mark from beyond the arc combining with the Rams +14 on the backboards. At the final buzzer Virginia Commonwealth had six players reach double figures in scoring while Zach Lofton was the lone Redbird to accomplish the feat with 12 points with Daishon Knight and Paris Lee adding nine.
Illinois State is still a mystery to me but I sa good signs from Drexel despite losing to UCLA. I will take a shot with the healthy Dragons...
