The Louisiana State Tigers open the season with the Massachusetts Minutemen Tuesday.
LSU comes in to the new season looking to break in to the top four of the SEC provided the offense can find consistent scoring. The Tigers finished 19-12 in 2012-13 and the fans are hoping for much more with just one starter gone from the roster. The offense needs a boost and with that said most eye will be on Johnny O'Bryant III who averaged nearly 14 points and nine rebound but was a liability at the foul line wher he isn't much more then a 60% shooter. Fellow forward Shavon Coleman brings back over ten points and six rebounds and if he can develop some range and pick up a few points the Tigers have the start of a solid frontcourt. The guard combo of Andre Stringer and Anthony Hickey gave the team more then 21 points and could have been more if Hickey hit free throws and stayed on the floor and avoid suspensions.

Massachusetts handled Boston College 86-73 in their opener but it wasn't as easy as the score indicates. The Minutemen trailed 36-32 before expoding for 54 second half points to pull away. UMass hit at over 49% from the floor and finished with a +11 on the glass including 18 offensive rebounds to give a hot shooting team an extra ten looks. The defense did reasonably well by forcing 16 turnovers and holding BC to 43% shooting but the Minutemen proved to be a bit more explosive offensively behind Cady Lalanne and his game high 27 points and 12 rebounds on 12-15 from the floor. Chaz Williams added another 20 points on 6-12 while Sampson Carter rounded out the DD scoring with 12 points and eight boards. UMass went with a seven man rotation with all scoring and playing at least 17 minutes.
Massachusetts likes to score points and need their defense to step up against an experienced LSU. I'll take a shot with the points but will be looking at the total in the mean time...
