The 1-0 Fresno State Bulldogs visit the 1-0 Pittsburgh Panthers Tuesday night at 7PM on ESPN full court.
Fresno State moved to 1-0 in exciting fashion this weekend as they edged UC Irvine 98-97. The Bulldogs trailed by three as time expired when reserve Allen Huddleton hoisted a long three that won the game. Huddleton added 12 points in addition to his heroics and the Bulldogs offense was paced all night by Marvelle Harris and his career high 30 points. Fresno forced overtime after overcoming a 10 point halftime deficit. The Bulldogs were outrebounded by 11 but shot 51% from the field and forced 9 steals for the game. A road trip to Pitt should result in a much tougher defensive test for this offense.
USA TODAY Sports
Pitt won their opener in much easier fashion with an 33 point romp over Savannah State 88-55. Pitt won this game with their usual hard nosed defensive style holding Savannah State to 31% shooting and 25% shooting from deep. The Panthers loosened up their grips in the 2nd half after holding the Tigers to just 13 first half points. Derrick Randall had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the front court and Cameron Wright and James Robinson combined for 25 for the Pitt backcourt. The Panthers shot 50% for the game and owned a +19 advantage on the boards.
Fresno State is in for a rude awakening with a rowdy Pitt home crowd and a very strong defensive challenge. Look for the Panthers to try to slow things down in the half court and rattle Marvalle Harris with double teams. I like another big game for Randall up front and the Pitt depth and pressure to wear down Fresno State as Pitt pulls away for the late cover. The under would be a strong play here as well as I expect Pitt to control the tempo at home.
