The South Alabama Jaguars take the floor with the Texas Longhorns in Tuesday action.
South Alabama is penciled in as a challenger for the Sun Belt crown with Middle Tennessee State leaving the conference. The Jaguars took advantage of a depleted Detroit roster in a 74-58 rout to open the season on the right foot. Having said that, neither team shot the ball well with USA connecting at just 36% with the Titans checking in at 29%. The difference was the Jaguars hit nine from down town and Detroit was 1-14 from behind the line. Antoinne Allen led the scoring with 17 points with Michael Ammons adding 13 points and 14 rebounds followed by a 12 point effort from Aakim Saintil. Sun Belt POY Augustine Rubit was disappointing with nine points on 3-10 but did grab 12 boards.

I don't know if this is the year Texas gets back to being a prominent member of the Big 12 with many experts predicting for a middle of the row finish. Their tight 76-73 victory over Mercer was difficult for me to gage because they can be sneaky good but I'm sure it wasn't the rout most had hoped for. Texas did a decent job offensively with 45% shooting while limiting the Bears to 40% and they wiped the glass clean to the tune of 35-20 but Mercer sank a few more threes to hang around. Isaiah Taylor led the Longhorns with 17 points with Jonathan Holmes and Javan Felix adding eleven points apiece but Texas proved to be the deeper team with all ten players that saw the floor ending up in the scoring column.
South Alabama isn't a bad but Rubit has to play much better versus Texas or the Jaguars will lose. Taking a shot with a decent dog...
