The MAAC and Atlantic Ten collide when the Marist Red Foxes and St Joseph's Hawks meet on Wednesday.
Marist was supposed to be putting more emphasis on the defensive end of the floor in 2013-14 but through two games both opponents scored in the 70's. The Red Foxes have dropped to 0-2 following a 75-48 defeat to Elon who many think will challenge in the SoCon. The defense and offense struggled as the Phoenix jumped to a 47-16 lead at the break and were never challenged there after. Marist allowed 50% shooting and countered with 31% with a +13 at the stripe which wasn't enough with 18 giveaways leading to 12 more looks for Elon. Chavaughn Lewis paced the Red Foxes on the scoreboard with 13 points with Khallid Hart adding eleven points and five pulls while Eric Truog chipped in with nine points and another five boards.
St Joseph's drew a tough opening day opponent in Vermont who is predicted to make some noise in the America East. At the final buzzer it was the Hawks who made the most noise with a 74-64 victory as both ends of the floor were strong. St Joes jumped out to a 43-26 lead after 20 minutes and spent the remainder of the game holding off a Catamounts rally. In the end defense won it with Vermont hitting at 39% and 4-17 from long range. The Hawks connected at 46% and owned a +10 on the backboards but were not real good at the foul line (20-30) or from distance (6-16). Clancy Rugg led a trio of DD scorers with 17 points and six rebounds despite going 3-9 while Candon Rustin tossed in 15 followed by Sandro Carissimo and Ethan O'Day with a combined 19 points.
Huge, nasty spread as I anticipated and it's too high in my opinion because the Hawks are not a team that has buried people. St Joes it is but not a game for me but they should cover if they care too...
