The Columbia Lions square off with the Michigan State Spartans Friday night.
Columbia is expected to struggle in a fairly wide open Ivy League which might not mean a thing since the Lions were supposed to be competitive last season and had a hard time so the bottom line is nobody knows right now. The Lions did look good in a 71-70 loss to Manhattan to fall to 1-1 in the early going as their defense didn't grt enough stops with the Jaspers connecting at nearly 49% including 10-12 on threes. Columbia hung tough with 48% accuracy and 15 forced turnovers which turned in to six more shots. Grant Mullins paced the scoring with 23 points with Cory Osetkowski adding eleven while Maodo Lo and Alex Rosenburg combined for 17 points and ten boards.

The second ranked Spartans are loaded for bear which means the Big Ten title and National Championship are both well within reach. Michigan State survived an early season test in downing Kentucy 78-74 by holding off a huge second half rally from the Wildcats. MSU led 44-32 after 20 minutes despite missing out on numerous opportunities. UK finished strong in the shooting department at 45.5% with the Spartans slightly better at 47.6% with the defense forcing 17 giveaways which was crucial with Kentucky holding a 44-28 advantage on the backboards. Keith Appling was the offensive star with 22 points, eight pulls and eight helpers with Gary Harris checking in with 20 points followed by Adreian Payne with 15.
The question here is whether Michigan State cares if they win by 15 or 25 and don't forget their could be a let down after beating Kentucky. Gun to my head...
