The Drake Bulldogs visit the St. Mary’s Gaels in an early season, non-conference battle between undefeated teams.
Drake enters this contest sitting at 2-0 on the year after destroying Iowa Wesleyan by a score of 104-49 this past week. The Bulldogs shot the ball extremely well all game long and finished the contest shooting 64% from the floor. Drake built a 31 point halftime lead and never looked back behind the scoring duo of Richard Carter and Blake Danielak Carter finished with 14 and Danielak added 18 off the bench. The Bulldogs owned a 41-19 edge on the glass, forced 13 steals and only turned the ball over 5 times themselves the entire game -- most coming in garbage time late. Drake ranks 16th nationally in field goal percentage through two games (54.3%).
St. Mary’s is 3-0 on the season and most recently found the win column with a 78-65 win over a solid North Dakota State team. The Gaels led by 5-10 throughout in this one and relied heavily on their post presence to overwhelm NDSU down low. Brad Wadlow led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Beau Levesque added 14 and 9 for the Gaels frontcourt tandem. The Gaels were +18 on the glass and held the NDSU perimeter game in check, limiting them to just 1 three pointer made for the entire contest. St. Mary’s shot the ball 53% from the floor and had 16 assists as a team.
Both of these mid-majors are routinely solid and I expect this contest to be fairly close. Look for the Gaels experience and frontcourt size advantage to be the different on the floor, with their big home court advantage being the other differentiator here. I like the Gaels at home with the cover and another strong game for Wadlow and the front line.
