The Long Beach State 49ers look to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss with a road trip to face the Kansas State Wildcats Sunday afternoon at 4PM on Fox Sports Network.
Long Beach State sits at 1-2 on the season and registered their second loss in heartbreaking fashion this past week as they fell to neighboring rival Loyola Marymount 74-73. This game was knotted for most of the contest before a late put back and a pair of free throws clinched the win for the undefeated Lions. Long Beach State was led by Mike Caffey’s 23, 7 and 5 rebounds. Caffey was 7-11 from the floor and 8-12 from the line for the 49ers. The 49ers held Loyola Marymount to 2-21 from deep but were only able to hit 3 three’s of their own for the game. LBSU was dominated on the glass by the scrappy Lions and were also doomed by 26 team fouls, including a big one late that allowed the Lions to pull ahead for good.

Kansas State Wildcats pulled to .500 this past week with a 71-63 win over visiting Oral Roberts. The Wildcats rode the hot hand of guard Marcus Foster who shot it 9-12 from the field on his way to a game high 25 points. K-State shot it 50% from the field and managed 17 team assists to Oral Roberts 9 -- arguably the difference in the game. After an embarrassing opening game loss to Northern Colorado, the Wildcats find themselves in the midst of a favorable stretch of their schedule with plenty winnable games leading up to a contest with a solid Ole Miss team in a few weeks.
Long Beach State has been somewhat of a disappointment thus far this season but that was to be expected with the loss of some key contributors. K-State has shown vulnerability in their first two contests against mid-majors and while I like the atmosphere at Fred Bramlage Coliseum and the depth of the Wildcats to key their win, I like the 49ers with the road cover.
