The Oregon State Beavers visit the Maryland Terrapins for some non-conference hoops action this Sunday evening at 6PM on ESPNU.
Oregon State travels east after getting off to a rough start to the year. The Beavers lost their home opener to lowly Coppin State, but were without key contributor Devon Collier. With Collier back last week, the Beavers bested Portland 79-73. Roberto Nelson led the way for the Beavers with 24 points and 7 dimes and Collier added 11 and 11 in his season debut. The Beavers shot 54% from the field and controlled a +8 rebounding advantage -- something they will need to do against a thin, but bulky Maryland frontcourt. Beavers coach Craig Robinson will be reunited with his in-laws in this one as well as President Obama and the first family plan to be courtside for the contest in nearby College Park.

Maryland got their first win of the season this past week as they woke up midway through the second half and ran away from scrappy Abilene Christian 67-44. The Terps struggled mightily with their perimeter defense for about 26 minutes in this contest, trailing all game before pulling ahead at the 14 minute mark of the second half. After taking a 45-44 lead, the terps finished the game on a 22-0 run that lasted over 14 minutes -- an impressive feat no matter the opponent. The Terps were led by Jake Layman’s 19 points which featured an 11-0 second half run all by himself. Charles Mitchell added 15 and 11 in the post for the Terps against a super small AC lineup. The Terps were able to overcome 17 TO’s with a +18 rebounding advantage but will need to take better care of the ball against a more talented Oregon State team.
The Terps woke up late in their last contest after clearly underestimating their opponent. That is now two consecutive games that the Terps have played much better in the 2nd half. Look for Maryland to put together a complete game in front of the advantageous Comcast Center crowd and for Dez Wells to emerge from his shooting slump to fuel the terps to the cover at home against the visiting Beavers.
