The Michigan State Spartans and the Portland Pilots face off on Monday Night in college basketball action.
The Michigan State Spartans are off to a 3-0 start including their big win last week over Kentucky in Chicago. MSU followed up their big win with a less than inspiring nine point win over Columbia last Thursday. Gary Harris leads the Spartans averaging 17 points, five rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Adreian Payne is averaging 17 points and 8.0 rebounds, Keith Appling I averaging 12 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists, and Branden Dawson is averaging 9.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. As a team Michigan State is averaging 79.3 points and they are shooting 48.9 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from three-point land, and 75 percent from the free throw line while their opponents average 61 points and just 36.8 percent. Michigan State is ranked number two in the country.

The Portland Pilots are off to a 1-1 start to the season and they are the only team in the West Coast Conference to suffer a los so far this year. Portland opened the season with a 17-point win over UC Davis but followed that up with a six-point loss at Oregon State. Ryan Nicholas is averaging 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game as the top producer for the Pilots. Kevin Bailey leads the team in minutes and also averages 20.5 points per game and 3.5 assists while Bobby Sharp averages 14 points and Alec Wintering averages 7.5 points. Portland is averaging 86.5 points per game and they are shooting 46.4 percent from the floor, 38.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 5 percent from the free throw line while defensively their opponents are averaging 81 points and shoot 49.6 percent.
Michigan State is 2-5-1 against the spread in non-conference games, 1-6-2 against the spread following a win, and 2-5 against the spread in their last seven home games against a team with a losing road record. Portland is 4-10-1 against the spread in their last 15 road games, 1-3-1 against the spread in their lst five games, and 1-8 against the spread against a team with a winning record.
The spread here is gigantic but the issue really is that Michigan State doesn’t allow a high shooting percentage and Portland isn’t a good rebounding team and facing one of the best rebounding teams in the nation the Pilots are likely to get blown out here so I am going to cautiously lay the big number with Sparty.
